The National Association of System Head’s (NASH) Refugee Resettlement Initiative (RRI) has partnered with Every Campus a Refuge (ECAR) to launch a Training of Trainers program for college and university leaders on how to effectively support the integration of refugees into campus communities. The training, entitled, “Creating Inclusive Communities Together:
Transforming Higher Education Through Refugee Integration”, is free, certificate-bearing, and open to all faculty, staff, and students of U.S.-based colleges and universities.
This training will prepare campus leaders to support refugees and other newcomers in their communities, and develop plans to launch refugee-support programs, such as ECAR chapters to host refugees in on-campus housing; start mentorship programs for refugee-background students; build more inclusive classrooms for refugees; and even facilitate scholarships for refugee-background students. The training also works to raise awareness about the valuable role that colleges and universities can play as co-sponsors and sponsors of refugees.

About the National Association of System Heads:
NASH serves as a forum for the exchange of views and information among its members and on leveraging the power of systems to advance innovation and change in public higher education.
Systemness, or the idea that the whole can be more than the sum of its parts, is the fundamental concept that drives our work. Rather than seeing systems as collections of disparate actors, we believe that systems can be coordinated actors that leverage their power to convene and facilitate, along with their governing and policy-making authority, to build collaborations to support students and campuses; rather than trying to mediate competitive actions.
About the Refugee Resettlement Initiative:
NASH’s RRI aims to create welcoming campuses and promote the inclusion of refugees and displaced communities at universities across the U.S. through three goals:
- Raise awareness of a new role that universities can play for refugee students and families
- Provide technical and coordination support in the form of trainings
- Advocate for this work with the federal, state, and private sectors, as well as within systems and their alumni networks.
About Every Campus a Refuge:
ECAR was founded at Guilford College by Dr. Diya Abdo in September of 2015 to call on every college and university in the world to partner with their local refugee resettlement agencies to house refugees on campus grounds and assist them in resettlement. The idea is that university and college campuses have everything necessary – housing, food, care, skills – to take in refugees and support them as they begin their lives in their new homes.
